An Open letter to all Guyanese Chess Players
March 31, 2022
Dear Chess Player,
By all indications the 2022 Olympiad in Chennai, India will be held on July 26, 2022. As a result, we need to identify the players who will represent our Country and Federation before the end of June. We, therefore, need to complete the Grand Prix tournaments as well as the Open and Women’s National Championships before we can name our team in a fair and transparent manner.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions we started our first over-the-board event on March 19 – the first Saturday after restrictions were lifted – and completed the first Grand Prix tournament on March 27.
We simply do not have enough time to hold the remaining 3 Grand Prix events, the National Open and Female qualifiers and the National Open and Female Championships before the end of June. The GCF Executive has made the decision to hold 3 Grand Prix tournaments instead of the usual 4, with points being calculated on the top 2 performances out of the planned 3 events.
The Grand Prix system is well documented on the GCF website, we encourage all members to visit the page. As usual, the executive will welcome any questions.
With regard to the current requirements for the prevention of the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Executive of the Guyana Chess Federation has decided that a negative PCR or Antigen test, dated not more than 72 hours before entering the tournament venue, will be accepted for admission into the playing area. Please note that tournaments are usually held over two days for two weekends, so players who need to produce these certificates will have to do so every Friday throughout the length of the tournament. Players who have been vaccinated at least two weeks before the date of the tournament will only be required to produce their vaccination cards.
The FIDE Olympiad is our opportunity to go head to head against the rest of the world. Since our return to the games in 2012, Guyana has been steadily improving our standing in the world of chess. The Guyana Chess Federation encourages all players to make the sacrifice to take part in every Grand Prix Event so we can be sure that we are sending a team of our very best players.
Please keep checking www.guyanachess.org for updates.
Best Regards
Board of Directors
